Supporting roles are often the most interesting and give the actors a chance to showcase their talent and do something other than the patent roles they are known for. This is certainly true for the Best Actor In A Supporting Role (Male) category in Telugu this year. Most nominated actors are playing characters contrary to their image and the jury certainly would have a tough time in reaching consensus on the winner.

Allu Arjun

Allu Arjun – Rudhramadevi

Allu Arjun reportedly walked away with the plaudits despite not being the central character. His role of a Robin Hood like bandit was said to be one of the highlights of this period film. His body language and screen presence made one feel like he’s really stepped out of the pages of history. His Gona Ganna Reddy character is going to be remembered for a long time to come.

JB

Jagapathi Babu – Srimanthudu

Veteran actor Jagapathi Babu plays a self-made tycoon who has cut off all ties to his native village because of some bitter experiences. He was also playing Mahesh Babu’s father and his act of a stern patriarch was the perfect foil for Mahesh Babu’s role.

PKM

Posani Krishna Murali – Temper

Writer, director, producer and actor, Posani Krishna Murali is known to wear many hats. He’s a self-taught actor who specializes in bringing a natural finesse to the characters he portrays. In Temper, his role of a junior police officer who wants the hero to mend his ways came for much applause.

RD

Rana Daggubati – Baahubali

Rana towered heads and shoulders among them all, quite literally so, in Baahubali. As Bhallala Deva, he was shown to possess tremendous strength as well as tremendous ruthlessness. He may have been the antagonist in the story but you never saw his as a villain but as a man corrupted by his own ambition. We can wait for Baahubali: The Conclusion to release to know what lies in store for him…

SR

Sathya Raj – Baahubali

Katappa’s character was the most complex one in the film and director SS Rajamouli couldn’t have thought of anyone better than the veteran Sathya Raj to essay it. On one hand he was a slave loyal to the throne but served Baahubali in his heart of hearts. The various nuances were perfectly brought to life by the actor.
