Lil Jon is an American rapper, DJ and music producer. He’s best known for his style of hip-hop called “crunk”. Lil Jon was born Jonathan Smith on January 17, 1971 in Atlanta, Georgia. His mother, Carrie Smith-Williams, was a foster parent, and his father died of bone marrow cancer. Lil Jon attended Frederick Douglass High School in Atlanta. He studied at Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia for two years.

CAREER
Lil Jon started out as a DJ at various Atlanta night clubs. He worked at Jermaine Dupri‘s record label, So So Def Recordings, from 1993 to 2000. Lil Jon formed the group ‘Lil Jon & the East Side Boyz’ during the mid 1990s. They signed to Mirror Image Records and their debut studio album, Get Crunk, Who U Wit: Da Album, was released in October 1997. The group’s second album, We Still Crunk!!, was released in 2000 by BME Recordings. Their third album, Put Yo Hood Up (2001), featured the single “Bia’ Bia'” with Ludacris and Too Short. A fifth album dubbed ‘Crunk Juice’ dropped in 2004 at #3 on the Billboard 200. It featured the singles “What U Gon’ Do” with Lil Scrappy, and “Real N!gga Roll Call” with Ice Cube.

Lil Jon co-wrote and produced Usher‘s 2004 hit single “Yeah!”. Other notable productions include “Salt Shaker” by Ying Yang Twins, and “Shorty Wanna Ride” by Young Buck. Lil Jon released his solo debut album, Crunk Rock, in 2010. It featured guest appearances from artists like R. Kelly, Soulja Boy, Stephen Marley and Pitbull.

Aside from music, Lil Jon has made several film and television appearances. His big screen debut was the 2004 comedy film, Soul Plane. He had small roles in Date Movie (2006) with Alyson Hannigan, and Scary Movie 4 (2006) with Anna Faris. Lil Jon was a contestant on Donald Trump‘s Celebrity Apprentice in 2011 and again in 2013. Other television appearances include Pimp My Ride (2009), and Comedy Bang! Bang! (2015).
